"hey! i was just wondering- what's object permanence, or a lack of it? like. i have bpd and i know what it is (vaguely) but i just sorta want a clear-ish definition of it, bc im really confused? sorry if you get this a lot!! and i hope im not being too much of a bother ahh"

Hello love. Don’t worry, you’re not bothering me at all!
Object permanence is the understanding that objects, including human beings, keep existing when you stop observing them. A young child, for example, lacks object permanence: when their mother leaves the room, they start crying because they cannot realise that their mother exists when they are not seeing her. It’s an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude. This also explains why they enjoy peek-a-boo so much, when they don’t see your face, they can’t grasp that you are still there.
People with bpd lack object permanence, whenever they do not feel an emotion, for example, they ‘forget’ it ever existed. When someone doesn’t tell them they love them, someone with bpd feels as if they are loved at all. So, they quite literally lack the idea that some objects, concepts, feelings, etc, are permanent.
I hope this cleared things up!
